Spanish explorers and exploration routes : by Jennifer Harrell

Greetings, my name is Amerigo Vesspucci. I was born in Florence, Italy on March 18, 1454. As a young boy, I was always fascinated by astronomy and the study of navigation.

the universe. To earn money, I got a job supplying ships. One ship I supplied was in Seville, Spain for Christopher Columbus. I had been well educated and became a businessman when I became an adult.

My voyage was for Spain and my goal was to find a star above the South Pole, just like the one above the North Pole. If I found it, people would be able to find latitude in the Southern Hemisphere. So, I set sail. All was going good, but forceful opcean currents pushed me back. When I had returned to Spain, I found out I h

ad actually crossed the “Line of Demarcation”,or seen the end of Brazil. I also knew I was the first to do this because I had done it before explorer Carbond had. That is why “America” is named after me, “Amerigo."

Vespucci's route

Vespucci sailed looking for a star above the South Pole. When he had gone back to Spain, he found out that he had passed the Line of Demarcration.

My name is Ferdinand Magellan. I was born in 1480 Saborosa, Spain. When I was 10 years old both my parents died so I had to live with my uncle for a majority of my childhood. I was also appointed as a queen’s messenger when I was 12 years old as a source of education.

My first voyage was in 1505, and I was now 25 years old. I had claimed the “Spice Islands” as land for Portugal. My next voyage was for Spain. I set out with 5 ships in the search of the channel that was thought to separate Japan and the Americas. After days of sailing towards my destination, I finally found what is was looking for. It took thirty-eight days to get through the channel itself, and only three of the five ships were able to survive. Once out, I found myself in a peaceful ocean. So this is why I named it the “Pacific Ocean” or “peaceful ocean.” Everything was going well on my journey back to Spain. Until I realized that there was no sign of land, and it was another 3 months before any sign of land appeared. Much of my crew starved and died.

Ferdinand Magellan was killed when his crew had landed in the Philipphenes. His crew had gone to sail back to their homeland, Spain. When they returned, they were the first to circumnavigate (sail around the world.)

Ferdinand’sroute

His crew stared in Spain, went under South America (to get to the channel), though the Pacific Ocean, through the Philipphine islands, and back to Spain. This means that he sailed around the world from Spain, back to Spain.

Hello, my name is Francisco Pizzaro, and I conquered the Incan Empire. I was born to a noble family in Salamaca, Spain. I never went to school, so I did not learn to read. Instead I herded pigs for fifteen years. As a boy, I did not have any parents, and had to live with my grandparents.

My journey was in 1509 with Captain Balboa (another explorer). Its purpose was to explore what is now modern day Panama. I had heard great stories of gold and riches in the Americas, and I wanted to find it. In 1527, explorers found out about the Incan Empire, and about the gold they had. The King and Queen aloud me to go after it. I travel along the west coast of South America, and then traveled upward more until I found the Empire. I invaded, and was attacked by an Incan army. Many of my men were lost in this battle, but I managed to escape. Later I came back with a larger army, and was able to capture the emperor, Atahualpa. The Incas offered me much gold when we beat them in battle. I did not accept the gold. Instead I killed the emperor, and took all the

gold. In 1533, I became governor of my empire, and later much of South America was conquered.

Pizzaro's route

Pizzaro conquered the Incan Empire, and traveling back and for to Panama. He received much gold, and later took over much of South America.

I’m Hernan Cortez, and I am a famous Spanish explorer. I was born in 1485, and my parents were Martin Cortez and Catalina Pizzaro. For education, I had gone to the University of Salamanca for two years. As a young man, I was determined to live an adventurous life.

In 1511, I went along with Dieg Veluquiez to colonize Cuba to get experience. When I finally returned home to Spain, I married and took command of my very first expedition. So on November 18, 1518, I was picked to build a colony in what is now Mexico. I left Santiago with 10 vessels, 15 Spaniards, 300 Indians, 10 brass guns, and a dozen horses. During my journey, I went around the peninsula at Yucatan (which

is part of Mexico). On November 8, 1519, I reached Tenochtitlan which is now Mexico City. I then attacked the Aztec empire, and forced them to surrender to me. When I went back to the capitol of the empire, there were thousands more waiting to attack. The only way I could get passed this would be to kill the emperor, which is what I did. I defeated the rest of the army with my Indian allies and captives. That was the end of the Aztec empire.

Cortez’s route

Hernan Cortez sailed with eleven ships to look for gold in America and Mexico. He traveled inland and conquered the Aztec Empire. Its capital ,Tenochtitlan, is shown.
